Sad to hear about Daddy Lumba’s passing—he really was a giant in Ghanaian music and definitely deserved all the praise he’s getting now. But honestly, I hope the government doesn’t overstep here. Paying tribute is one thing, but calls for a state funeral and national vigils feel like a slippery slope; the state shouldn’t be in the business of deciding whose legacy gets honored with taxpayer money. Let people celebrate his life in their own way, voluntarily, instead of making it some official, government-led event. The power of Daddy Lumba’s music is that it connected with people freely, not because the state told us to care. Let’s just respect the wishes of his family and keep the state out of it as much as possible.
