Ghana is undertaking its most comprehensive overhaul of mining laws in nearly two decades, aiming to shorten mining licence durations and ensure direct revenue-sharing with local communities. The reforms are designed to promote equity, sustainability, and increased local investment in the mining sector. At the same time, the government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining (galamsey), seizing hundreds of excavators, revoking numerous small-scale mining licences, and arresting over 1,300 suspects in 2025 alone. Authorities are also implementing new requirements for registering mining machinery and leveraging technology to track equipment and enforce compliance. These efforts reflect a dual strategy to formalize the mining industry while protecting the environment and local livelihoods.
