Ghana is undertaking its most comprehensive mining law reforms in nearly two decades, aiming to shorten mining licence durations and require direct revenue-sharing with local communities. The government is intensifying its crackdown on illegal mining (galamsey), with over 1,300 arrests and hundreds of excavators seized in 2025 alone. New measures include mandatory registration of all mining machinery, enhanced tracking of equipment, and the potential revocation of hundreds of small-scale mining licences. Authorities are also reclaiming forest reserves previously occupied by illegal miners and seeking stronger partnerships with traditional leaders. The reforms are designed to balance investment, environmental protection, and equitable benefits for local populations.
